Citizens Bank says it will help several Massachusetts nonprofits provide 1 million meals to needy state residents this year.

The help will take the form of a series grants totaling $525,000 from the bank’s charitable foundation. Organizations slated to receive donations include the Greater Boston Food Bank, the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts, Women’s Lunch Place, Community Servings, the Worcester County Food Bank, the Merrimack Valley Food Bank, Project Bread, Boston Medical Center, Bay Cove Human Services, Family Pantry of Cape Cod and Food for Free.

In total, Providence-based Citizens says it will help provide 4.5 million meals to local food organizations throughout the bank’s footprint, which includes the eastern seaboard and the upper Midwest, where it operates as Charter One.

The grants are meant to coincide with Hunger Action Month.

Jerry Sargent, Citizens’ Massachusetts president, is scheduled to formally announce the grants this afternoon at the Greater Boston Food Bank.
