Panera Bread will use the cash receptacles at its four Massachusetts stores for Hunger Action Month to allow customers to donate to the Greater Boston Food Bank.

Panera gives all of its unsold baked goods nightly to food pantries and other groups that provide hunger relief, according to a press release from the company, which claims the bread donated nationwide was worth $100 million retail.

The Panera Cares Community Breadbox Program was dedicated to the food bank in concert with Hunger Action Month.

Panera’s Bay State stores are located in North Attleboro, Plainville, Seekonk and Dartmouth.

The company cited a 2010 study that indicates how the economic downturn has increased the need for food in Massachusetts.

The study suggests that up to 545,000 people were served by Greater Boston Food Bank in 2009, representing a 23 percent increase since 2005. The study also says that one in nine residents of Eastern Massachusetts faces hunger on a regular basis, while a third of households receiving food assistance had at least one child younger than 18.
