Roughly 1,000 members of Boston’s tech community banded together Thursday, spending a collective 5,000 hours volunteering as part of TUGG’s Third Annual Tech Gives Back.
Local companies, including EverTrue, DataXu, Promoboxx and Atlas Venture, donated their time at one of 26 locations around Greater Boston. Whether painting fences, constructing science kits or landscaping, the manual labor went toward supporting six local nonprofits—three of which were deemed yesterday’s “big winners.”
TUGG emphasizes “open source philanthropy,” meaning, recipients of the funds raised are voted on by the tech community itself. YouthHarbors, Science from Scientists and BUILD Boston were the three nonprofits that walked away with the most money yesterday, according to TUGG’s Executive Director David Brown.
In total, Brown said roughly $200,000 was raised—a fact widely celebrated at the Tech Gives Back Block Party held at Empire following a day’s worth of hard work. There were games, drinks and some incredibly attractive cars. The community was impressed:

“[Thursday] was perfect evidence of just how much the community can do when it pulls together to give back,” said Brown in an email to BostInno, adding the event far exceeded expectations. “Huge thank yous go to the entire ecosystem for making this happen. Already looking forward to TGB 4!”
