Office space geared toward the needs of startups has grown steadily in recent years in communities around Greater Boston — with the notable exception of areas south of the city.

But that’s changing now, with the opening this month of the Quincy Center for Innovation.

Through a partnership between the Quincy Chamber of Commerce, Quincy 2000 Collaborative, Eastern Nazarene College, the South Shore Innovation Center and the City of Quincy, the center officially opened to the public on Oct. 1.

The 12,500-square-foot facility is located at 180 Old Colony Ave., near the Wollaston MBTA stop,on the third floor of Eastern Nazarene College’s business school building. The nonprofit center specifically targets startups in the life sciences, tech and cleantech sectors.

According to Donna Mavromates, VP of the Quincy Chamber of Commerce and director of the center, the initiative is part of an effort to attract startups to Quincy.

“We learned that an innovation center is often the breeding ground for young entrepreneurs in many of the emerging industries thriving throughout the state who we hope to attract,” Mavromates said.

The innovation center currently hosts nine companies, with the potential to house up to 60.

Program entrants have the option to pay as little as $100 per month for an open space co-working table, or dedicated table space for $150. Shared work space in a semi-private cubicle runs $200 per month with private cubicle or large office space running between $300 and $650 per month. Length of stay is a minimum of one month with a maximum stay of two years.

Quincy Center for Innovation entrants have access to WiFi, kitchen facilities, conference rooms, classroom and lounge space, printers and copiers. Program entrants also take part in a mentoring program consisting of CPA, legal, IT, marketing and public relations professionals, according to program leaders.
