Voters in East Boston rejected the Suffolk Downs casino application Tuesday, in a referendum that drew large turnout in that section of the city.
The Boston Globe reported that voters in East Boston rejected the casino application by 56 percent, with 44 percent in favor. Voters in Revere approved the casino question, with 61 percent in favor. Revere had a say in the application because the property crosses into Revere.
The Suffolk Downs proposal had been one of three resort casino prospects for the greater Boston region. Milford’s Foxwoods Massachusetts casino application will go to Milford voters on Nov. 19.
Everett voters have already overwhelmingly approved a referendum on a casino proposal by Wynn Resorts.
Only one resort casino application will get a state license for greater Boston. The Massachusetts Gaming Commission will make that decision, but voters in each of the host communities first had to approve the casino in a referendum, under state law.
