Bostonians upset with Maher’s bombing comments

BOSTON (WHDH) — Less than two weeks after the Red Sox tribute at the Boston Marathon finish line HBO talk show host Bill Maher is downplaying the importance of the Boston Marathon bombing.

“You know, it was, again, a bad day. Three people died, that’s terrible, more were maimed, that’s horrible, but unfortunately, that happens every day in car accidents and everything else. I mean, your city was not leveled by Godzilla,” Maher said.

The team took time out of their World Series celebration parade to honor the victims of the bombing, and now fans are upset that Maher made light of the events.

“Ya know I think those are things you keep to yourself. Obviously it was a horrible tragedy and it was shocking. Boston is a great city, and I think it’s great a team can bring home a trophy and honor to remember something so horrible that has happened,” Jeremy Purchase said.

Others are upset that Maher, a New York resident, criticized Boston’s grieving process.

“I don’t want to insult New Yorkers, I understand where they’re coming from because they suffered a personal tragedy themselves. Everyone recovers and grieves differently. Criticizing someone for going through their grieving process and coming out feeling stronger from it is a little bit insensitive,” Andrea Schlageter said,

Former Congressman Anthony Weiner appeared on Maher’s show Thursday night when he scolded the host for taking exception to the nice moment.
