Help Greater Boston Food Bank give back to those in need

(NECN) – While many people are thinking about turkey, stuffing or Black Friday deals, this is also a time to think of the less fortunate and give back to those in need.

We were joined by Suzanne Battit from the Greater Boston Food Bank.

Battit says the need is greater this year for a number of reasons. She says the economy has been slow to recover and one in nine people in Eastern Massachusetts is at risk of hunger. She also said the need is greater because of recent SNAP cuts, which affected 889,000 people. Those people are now relying more on food pantries and services provided by the Greater Boston Food Bank.

The GBFB has already provided over 260,000 Thanksgiving meals so far and Battit says they expect to provide close to 400,000 meals to those in need in eastern Massachusetts.

A little money can go a long way, she says. Every $20 provides five meals.

She says a Thanksgiving meal contains turkey or a turkey substitute, fresh produce, stuffing, cranberry sauce and gravy.

“All the great things that we all enjoy on Thanksgiving Day.”
