Boston Maccabi Rugby, a community service-based rugby team serving the Greater Boston area, traveled to Hannaford in Waltham with Sam Slater of the Slater Foundation and Boston City Councilor Tito Jackson to pick up contents for 1,000 “Thanksgivukkah” baskets complete with mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce and Hanukkah gelt (chocolate candy) that they planned to donate to families in Boston this year.
The effort is funded in large part by Slater, who is contributing $15,000 towards 1,000 turkeys to accompany the baskets.
“Community service is at the core of our mission and makes our rugby team stronger on and off the field, and it’s an honor to be involved in this great cause once again this year,” said Harry Shipps, director of community service for Boston Maccabi Rugby. “Given the once in a lifetime opportunity to celebrate Hanukkah and Thanksgiving on the same day, we’re glad we can add a little Thanksgivukkah flair to Councilor Jackson’s yearly turkey giveaway.”
