AMHERST, Mass. –
The Gridiron Club of Greater Boston announced that UMass football senior safety Devin Brown has been honored with the 68th Annual Nils V. “Swede” Nelson Award which is given annually to a New England football player who has demonstrated outstanding achievement in academics, athletics, sportsmanship and citizenship. Brown was one of the top performers for the Minutemen in the classroom and on the field this past season.
A native of Piedmont, Calif., Brown ranked second on the team in tackles and was recognized as a member of the Capital One Academic All-District I football team. That honor marked the first for a UMass player since Anthony Nelson earned the academic distinction in 2010.
The Minutemen’s starting safety on defense, Brown is a psychology major with a 3.77 grade point average. He tallied a career-best 99 total tackles in 12 starts. He was also tied for the team lead with two interceptions and had three tackles for loss along with a fumble recovery.
This was Brown’s first season as a starter for UMass after playing primarily on special teams and as a reserve cornerback in 2012. He had four double-figure tackle games and his interception against Miami (Ohio) helped seal the win for the Minutemen. Twice he set his career-best in total tackles for a game with 12 at Buffalo and at Ohio.
The senior is a Dean’s List student and a member of the University’s Commonwealth Honor College.
