Winter storm warning issued by National Weather Service for Boston area

BOSTON — The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the Boston area from 1 p.m. Saturday to 1 p.m. Sunday.

At least six to 10 inches of snow are expected to fall in the Greater Boston area during the storm. Icy conditions may develop according to the NWS.

A coastal flood advisory is in effect from 8 a.m. to noon on Sunday because of the storm coinciding with a high tide. A 1.5-to-2 foot surge, according to the NWS, is expected with waves between five and 10 feet.

The Boston Department of Public Works will have 300 pieces of snow removal equipment at the ready to handle the storm. The mayor’s office has issued their own winter weather advisory and has added staffing this weekend to handle an additional problems that may occur because of the storm.

“The City of Boston is preparing for winter weather, and we’re asking residents to do the same,” Mayor Menino said in a statement.

“We are actively monitoring the forecasts, and our snow team is prepared to respond and get our roads clear. As Bostonians continue to shop and prepare for Christmas, we will also focus on helping keep sidewalks and pedestrian walkways clear, so that the snow doesn’t hurt local businesses,” said Menino.
