Event raises $100K for Breakthrough Boston

Breakthrough Greater Boston, the nonprofit organization dedicated to preparing under-resourced students to attend four-year colleges and to training the next generation of urban teachers, hosted its annual Breakthroughs in Education event Dec. 5. Now in its sixth year, the lecture series featuring experts working to improve urban education raised $100,000 in supporter contributions.

This year’s event, A Vision for Black Boys’ Academic Success, drew Boston and Cambridge public school educators, elected officials, philanthropists and local community members.

Two awards were presented at the event, including the Elizabeth D. Hodder Award for Excellence in Teaching, honoring Breakthrough teacher and Fulbright scholar, Rasheeda Abdul-Musawwir and the Breakthroughs in the Community Award to Pearson Education.

The funds raised by this year’s event will support Breakthrough Greater Boston’s work recruiting the next class of students and next cohort of teaching fellows at the organization’s Cambridge and Boston campuses.
