Brockton area students to join governor for day of service

About a dozen students from the Greater Brockton area will be joining Gov. Deval Patrick and about 400 other 8th-graders from across the state to perform acts of community service throughout Boston on Martin Luther King Day.
The day of service is being organized by Project 351, a non-profit organization formed by Patrick in 2011 to promote youth participation in the community.
“Our young people have unlimited potential to create positive change across our commonwealth, our nation and our world,” said Patrick in a statement. “Project 351 recognizes that while providing a wonderful opportunity to inspire, challenge and motivate our next generation of leaders to give back and make a significant impact in our community.”
Each student was nominated to be Project 351 Ambassador by teachers in their school system for their leadership potential, exemplary service and embodiment of compassion, commitment, humility and kindness.
The students will be performing community service with several different organizations across Boston, including: the Pine Street Inn, the Greater Boston Food Bank, Cradles to Crayons, the Orchard Garden Boys and Girls Club, the Dudley Street Neighborhood Charter School, the Vine Street Community Center and the Mason Elementary School.
Prior to beginning their service projects, the students will gather at the Statehouse at 10 a.m. to celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., in whose honor they are performing the service.
