The Boston Redevlopment Authority has approved $60 million in new development in three neighborhoods.

Projects include the redevelopment of Hood Dairy site in Charlestown, a new charter school in East Boston and the expansion of the West Roxbury YMCA.

  • Hood Dairy: The project is part of a 20-acre development plan that promises to transform the industrial plant into a research and office park. The existing one-story warehouse at 500 Rutherford Ave. will be renovated and a 61,000-square-foot addition will be built. The project developer is Hood Business Park LLC, an entity managed by Stephen J. Kaneb of Lynnfield. The project architect Symmes Maini McKee Associates.
  • Excel Academy East Boston Middle/High School Charter School: A new, three-story building at 413 Bremen St. in East Boston. will house the charter school and replace a parking lot and three vacant buildings. The two-acre campus will include a 70,000-square-foot building with 35 classrooms, community rooms, a cafeteria, gymnasium and office space. The project also includes a 30-car pick up and drop off area, a 50-space parking lot and a 24,100-square-foot courtyard. With the construction of the new facility, Excel Academy plans to move its Orient Heights middle school at 1150 Saratoga St. with 224 students to the project site. In addition, the project will house 672 high school students for a total enrollment of 896 students. The $25 million project is being developed by Excel Academy Charter Schools, Inc and Studio G Architects. A groundbreaking is planned for this spring.
  • West Roxbury YMCA: The existing YMCA at 15 Bellevue St. will undergo a renovation, including the demolition of 16,000 square feet of the existing structure, which contains an outdated pool and gymnasium. In addition, 24,000 square feet will be added, replacing the adjacent former U.S. Post Office at 1972 Centre St. The updates and additions to the Y will better accommodate programs and allow for new initiatives such as a teen fitness center, expanded child care, senior programs, water therapy, handicapped access, youth sports, and programs for special needs children.
