House Speaker: Raise Minimum Wage to $10.50

House Speaker Bob DeLeo on Thursday released his plan to raise the state’s minimum wage to $10.50 an hour.

DeLeo, a Democrat from Winthrop, detailed his proposal in a speech to the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce, according to the Associated Press.

The wage hike would be phased in, according to the AP:

  • The minimum wage would jump from $8 an hour to $9 on July 1
  • It would go to $10 in 2015
  • It would rise again to $10.50 in 2016

The federal minimum wage is currently $7.25 an hour. President Obama has supported a plan to raise that figure to $10.10, and other states are considering raising their own minimum wages.
