Good morning and happy Tuesday. With the exception of Marthon-related stories it was a pretty slow news day in the world of BC sports. I’ll have a post later today about some of the BC connections to the Marathon and the general vibe of the day, but I’ll lead off with one of the more significant BC-related stories to come out of the race:
After six hours and 17 seconds, Chris Herren is a Boston Marathon man | FOX Sports on MSN
Now sober 5½ years, Herren’s life of late has been dedicated to overcoming his own seemingly insurmountable odds while also motivating others to stay valiant in the face of their own obstinate demons. His foundation, The Herren Project, raised nearly $60,000 in advance of the Boston Marathon — donations from people all over the world counting on him to run in the name of recovery.
Congratulations, Chris.
More BC alums scored in the NHL playoffs yesterday, obviously.
Brooks Orpik pulled of some sort of ridiculous dangle-and-snipe move that I’m sure even he is wondering how he managed – a crucial goal for Pittsburgh, who was down 2-0 at the time; this goal came in the waning seconds of the second period and cut the Columbus lead to 2-1.
Then Cam Atkinson got in on the action for the Blue Jackets:
His efforts restored a two-goal lead for Columbus, but the Penguins did come back to win 4-3. Other alums in action last night included Ben Smith, whose Blackhawks got in to the win column with a game 3 victory, and Paul Carey, whose Avalanche fell to Minnesota in OT. I’m probably missing some, since there are so many – it’s hard to keep track.

A right shoulder injury suffered by Williams in the Eagles’ regular season finale did what no other defense could do during the 2013 schedule – stop the Boston College ball carrier from wreaking havoc on the field. After three efficient years sharing rushing duties for BC, Williams produced one of the finest campaigns in school, Atlantic Coast Conference and NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision history, etching his name into all three record books.
Gaudreau’s 80-point season for Boston College earns player of the year honors (USCHO.com)
Boston College’s Gaudreau became the first player in 11 years to reach 80 points in a Hobey Baker Award-winning season, and it’s little surprise that Gaudreau is USCHO’s choice as national player of the year. In an era of moderate individual scoring totals, Gaudreau’s season resume sits at the top of the pile.
Baseball Beanpot: Boston College Falls to Northeastern, 4-3 – Soaring to Glory
In the consolation game of the 2014 Baseball Beanpot, held in Brookline on Marathon Monday, the Boston College Eagles were defeated by the Northeastern Huskies, 4-3.
Women’s Tennis To Play Pittsburgh First Round of ACC Tournament (BCEagles.com)
The Boston College women’s tennis team will be the 10th-seed in the 2014 Atlantic Coast Conference Championship and will face 15th-seeded Pittsburgh on Wednesday, April 23 at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.
