The portable signs warning motorists to expect delays on Sunday have been posted on Route 9 in advance of opening the Wegmans store in Newton’s Chestnut Hill.
For the legions of Greater Boston Wegmans fans who don’t want to drive to Northborough to shop at the New York-based firm’s first Massachusetts supermarket, the company’s newest — and smallest — store is set to open at Chestnut Hill Square.
The 80,000-square-foot supermarket includes a 10,500-square-foot liquor store and is smaller than the Northborough store, which measures 138,000 square feet.
Wegmans spokeswoman Jo Natale said the Chestnut Hill store’s inventory won’t carry the same full range of brands or sizes. But the scope of the Newton store’s prepared foods and perishable foods is similar, she said. The in-store dining area in Newton will have about 100 seats, compared to about 300 in Northborough.
Natale said the prices will be about 10 to 15 percent lower than those at nearby competitors. Surveys have found that Wegmans’ prices are similar to Market Basket, the region’s low-price supermarket leader.
Rich Boscia, the store manager, said his team of 550 employees have been working for months to “dazzle” customers with incredible service, the right selection, and low prices.
