US Muslims Walk Against Hunger

CAIRO – Muslim community leaders in the Greater Boston area are putting final touches on their planned “Walk Against Hunger” on Sunday, May 4, teaming up with Project Bread to raise awareness of the reality of hunger in the state and apply Islamic ethics of helping the poor and needy.

“On Sunday, May 4th, Muslims Against Hunger is proud to be joining in Project Bread’s Walk for Hunger,” a statement published at Project Bread website reads.

“Together, we raise awareness of the reality of hunger in our state, make a powerful statement about our shared commitment to help people in need, and, importantly, raise funds that make it possible to develop, fund, and facilitate much-needed programs,” it added.

For years, over 40,000 people from all faiths used to walk all or part of a 20-mile course through Greater Boston.

The walk event, planned annually, raises awareness about the state of hunger in the US state.

This year’s event saw the cooperation between ‘Muslims Against Hunger’ and Project Bread to spread the call for help and garner more support to their case.

The gathered funds are expected to help Bread Project to apply new “programs that interrupt the cycle of food insecurity in our communities, programs that provide hope”.

Preparing for tomorrow’s event, the Muslim group has printed special turquoise team t-shirts to be bought by participants in the walk.

All the funds raised would be directed to Bread Project as well.

Though there are no official estimates, the US is home to an estimated Muslim minority of six to eight million.

An earlier Gallup poll found that the majority of Americans Muslims are loyal to their country and optimistic about their future in the United States.

Another US survey has revealed that the majority of Americans know very little about Muslims and their faith.

According to Islamic Shari`ah, a capable Muslim pays 2.5 percent mandatory payment and spend it to help the poor and the needy.

In August 2013, Helping Hand for Relief and Development (HHRD) was recognized amongst the top 10 highly rated charities in the United States.

The ranking was announced by Charity Navigator, the nation’s largest and most-utilized evaluator of charities which has developed an unbiased, objective, numbers-based rating system to assess over 6,000 of America’s best-known charities.
