The Hub was under siege yesterday by terrorists — but that is exactly what authorities planned for during a 24-hour training exercise meant to simulate a real-life attack targeting the city and Greater Boston dubbed “Urban Shield.”
About 2,000 city employees, including police, fire, public health, emergency management and Metro-Boston Homeland Security, took part, along with personnel from Cambridge, Chelsea, Everett, Quincy, Revere, Somerville, Brookline and Winthrop.
The event began yesterday at 8 a.m. and was to end today at 8 a.m.
Some simulations performed included an active-shooter scenario, a hostage rescue of elected officials, a response to an explosive on the T and a structural collapse. The exercises took place in Brookline, Cambridge and throughout Boston.
