NEWBURYPORT — The restaurant known as 10 Center Street has changed hands, and will open next month as Nix’s Mate at 10 Center Street.

Several other restaurants could also be opening and/or moving to new locations in coming months.

Documents at City Hall state that the Bostonian Hospitality Group has taken a 10-year lease on the venue at 10 Center Street, which is owned by New England Development.

Bostonian Hospitality Group owns other such properties, Nix’s Hartford, Nix’s Plymouth, Nix’s Mate in Boston, and Nix’s Brew Pub in Nantucket. The upscale Nix’s specializes in seafood and “New England style cuisine,” and also includes a raw bar.

Total occupancy of the venue is 273, and it offers 3,766 square feet of space. Annual rent is $10,000 per month, according to documents. Renovation costs are listed at about $25,000 and anticipated opening date is June 15.

10 Center Street has been a mainstay in Newburyport, started by restaurateur Toby Hoare over four decades ago. He sold it to Ann and Chuck Lagasse, who in turn sold their properties to New England Development about a decade ago.

The restaurant 10 Center Street was still operating as of Thursday. Employees there declined comment.

Mark Janos, a local attorney involved in the transaction, could not be reached for comment.

In other restaurant news, owners of Loretta restaurant on State Street are reportedly attempting to lease the former Chase and Lunt office building on State Street.

Loretta’s has emerged as a popular destination, and needs more room. Local observers say costs of moving a restaurant into an office building will be considerable, and no contracts have been signed.

The former Chase and Lunt building was slated to become The Cottage restaurant but the deal fell through, according to local business professionals.

A venue in the Tannery that once housed Enzo restaurant is undergoing renovation, and will soon become 50 Water Street restaurant, downtown observers say.
