In an eleventh hour switch, “Sherlock” actor Benedict Cumberbatch steps in for Guy Pearce in the role of Billy Bulger, the law abiding brother of notorious gangster Whitey Bulger in the movie “Black Mass” currently in pre-production in the Greater Boston area.

The movie “Black Mass” is based on the book by two Globe reporters (Dick Lehr and Gerard O’Neill) recounting the story of Whitey Bulger, Billy Bulger, FBI agent John Connolly and the FBI’s witness protection program.

According to the Northendwaterfront.com, Last April a casting call was held for “Italian wise guys, Irish tough guys, politicians and people with cars from the 70′s/80′s.”

The Boston Globe broke the news that the Johny Depp film “Black Mass” will see Aussie actor Guy Pearce replaced by Benedict Cumberbatch.

The movie, which is being directed by Scott Cooper and stars Johnny Depp as Whitey. Depp, of course, perfectly nailed the elusive Boston accent in the 2001 film “Blow.”

Since we’re on this Boston thing, The Dorchester accent is slightly different than pure Beantown or even Charlestown. It would be wicked awesome if the Real Housewives of South Boston got picked up by Bravo.

Just saying.
