A few months back, Chris Grimaldi decided to shake things up a bit at the Improper Bostonian, the club he owns in Dennis Port. At the same time, a club Tracy Evans booked in Pennsylvania was shutting down and she heard through the grapevine about the Improper.
“I was talking to a couple other venues in Florida and North Carolina, as well as the Improper,” says Evans, on the phone. “The reason I chose this was because I like putting myself in a challenging situation. The other venues were good-to-go and just wanted to bring someone on board. The Improper hadn’t been known for original live music for some time and I wanted to be the person to change that.”
She’s got the Bernie Worrell Orchestra coming July 10 (see main story), the Manhattan Project July 19, Aqueous Aug. 2, After Funk Aug. 9 and Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Aug. 31.
“I’m new to the Cape, so I have no idea what to expect,” Evans says. “My goal would be to do it every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. This year, because the owner had already booked some things, I was only able to get mostly Saturdays. But Chris said, ‘This is your baby.’ We’re trying to get people to try something new.”
The club has two separate floors. Evans is booking concerts that take place on the first floor with a capacity of 250. The majority of the shows are free,” says Evans. “The first year is about getting the word out.”
Evans, who owns a booking agency, says she’s drawn to bands on the jam band/festival circuit. She books a festival in Pennsylvania, The Gathering at Chaffee’s. “I follow the festival circuit and these are bands I worked with time and time again. I made a wish list and started picking up my phone. A handful of bands have been trying to play Cape Cod, but if you don’t play covers or are not a local band — not interested. I’ve opened the door.”
But there are other types of bands, too, like the bluegrass group, the Blind Owl Band and the two-piece female-fronted rock band SIRSY.
Wellfleet’s Beachcomber, of course, is noted for bringing in original live music, too.
“The Improper Bostonian has been working diligently to find its niche,” Evans says. “There are so many events happening during the summer on Cape, a destination venue or bar truly has to grab their customers with something cool and unique. If there’s not a scene, it must be built. Someone has to take the plunge and I’m up for the challenge. There are loads of original music lovers on Cape and they are limited to where they can see it.”
