In July, Saul Mirowitz Jewish Community School welcomed Rabbi Scott Slarskey as the school’s Director of Jewish Life. Slarskey will oversee the Jewish life of the school, supervise the Judaics faculty, write and implement curriculum, orchestrate tefillot and celebrations and teach courses in the middle school.
Two years ago, Cheryl Maayan, Mirowitz head of school, met Slarskey on a visit to northeastern Jewish Day schools. At the time, he was the middle school principal at Solomon Schechter of Greater Boston, and Maayan said she was impressed by the profound, hands-on learning experiences he had created for his students.
Last fall, the two educators were in touch again, this time to engage their students in a friendly, tzedakah-based World Series wager.
“When Rabbi Slarskey came to Mirowitz for his interview visit, he energized all of our students and inspired our faculty,” Maayan says. “That energy, combined with his passion for pluralism and working with families from diverse denominational identities made it clear that we were a perfect match.”
Slarskey will work with Mirowitz faculty to continue the school’s efforts to build a standards-based Hebrew Bible (Tanakh) curriculum aligned with the Jewish Day School Standards and Benchmarks Project.
Slarskey moved to St. Louis with his wife, Rabbi Tracy Nathan, and their son Hanan, who will be in the fourth grade at Mirowitz. Nathan will also be involved at Mirowitz, helping students prepare for leading Torah study and chanting Torah.
“We have received such a warm welcome and look forward to being a part of this wonderful St. Louis Jewish community,” Slarskey said.
