Time capsule from 1901 found in Old State House in Boston

BOSTON, Sept. 25 (UPI) — A time capsule from 1901 was found in the head of a lion statue on top of the Old State House in Boston Monday while it was being prepared for restoration.

Sculptor Robert Shure found the capsule after the lions were taken down Sunday, said spokeswoman for the Bostonian Society Heather Leet.

According to the Boston Globe, the time capsule contains photographs, autographs, and sealed letters from politicians and influential Bostonians, along with old newspaper clippings.

Leet said they hope to retrieve the items by sometime next week, but have to make preparations to prevent any damage, reports the Boston Globe.

“We’re hoping it didn’t get wet,” said Leet. An “archivist will be on hand to see the condition of the items — papers could be deteriorating, that sort of thing … We don’t want the newspapers to turn to dust.”

Plans are being made to place a new capsule in the lion’s head for the Bostonians of the 2100s. They plan to put in facsimiles of the 1901 contents and a photo of Mayor Martin J. Walsh, but are asking the public for ideas and are taking suggestions via social media using the hashtag #LionAndUnicorn.
