Before each of the 34 films showing at the Boston Film Festival from September 24th-28th,, 2014, foodtweeks celebrity ambassador, Kelly Le Brock will be advocating for the use of the app as well as bringing attention to September’s Hunger Action Month. The Greater Boston Food Bank and foodtweeks are on a month long action oriented campaign to elevate awareness about hunger in America and to end it as part of a national effort lead by Feeding America. Part of this campaign was to develop special download codes for the festival (BostonFilmFest) and for all those who are not attending the festical but want to be involved, the food bank code (GBFB), to make their donations 4 times more powerful.
foodtweeks is a tool that the Boston Film Festival attendees can download and immediately use to support the cause. Before each screening, including the new film “Wild” with Reese Witherspoon and Laura Dern, festival goers will be show a short trailer explaining why to download and how to use the app. In each, it will explain that reporting”tweeking” (trimming calories from food) through the app will result in foodtweeks donating to theThe Greater Boston Food Bank, enabling the food bank to distribute an equal number of nutritious calories to families in need. This app can be downloaded on eitheriPhoneorAndroiddevices.
Whenever anyone with The Greater Boston Food Bank promo code or the Bostion Film Festival “tweeks” their food in the foodtweeks app, the donation to The Greater Boston Food Bank is automatically doubled.During Hunger Action Month, foodtweeks will double that donation again, so 4 times the number of calories a foodtweeks user removes from their food will be turned into even more nutritious calories that go to those in need.Using social media will also result in doubled or tripled donations by posting a “tweek” on Facebook or Twitter.
foodtweeks makes it possible for weight-conscious consumers to be “heroes” who serve their communities by feeding the hungry and all at no cost to them in time or money. Simply by trimming calories from foods in an easy, enjoyable way, they donate calories to food banks. Those attending the festival will be encouraged to support The Greater Boston Food Bank by downloading the app.
“foodtweeks is proud and excited to support The Greater Boston Food Bank,” said Elisa Shannon, foodtweeks Executive Vice President of Partnership Development. “The Greater Boston Food Bank is a highly committed and respected organization that provides outstanding service to food-insecure members of our community.”
Through a mission to end hunger, foodtweeks also offers a unique approach to weight management. Users simply tell the app what food they are thinking of buying, eating or preparing. The app instantly displays images of suggested “tweeks” that remove enough calories to make a positive difference but not in a way that changes the taste or leaves users hungry.
In order to have relevant “tweeks” for various foods, foodtweeks maintainsa crowdsourced picture database of more than 44,000 small changes that show users how to “tweek” everything from a particular brand of cheeseburger at a national restaurant chain to grocery store purchases, and homemade dishes of every kind.
foodtweeks is rapidly expanding its partner-base to food banks all across the nation, with more joining each week, said Ms. Shannon, herself a former food bank executive. Food banks that wish to affiliate with foodtweeks may contact Ms. Shannon by email atelisa@foodtweeks.com.
Jay Walker, the inventor of foodtweeks, is also the chairman of Patent Properties and curator of TEDMED, the health and medicine edition of the famous TED conference. A noted entrepreneur, Mr. Walker has founded three companies that serve more than 50 million customers. He is best known as the creator of Priceline, which brought a new level of value to the travel industry.
