Kevin Washington, president and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Boston, has been tapped to run the organization’s national parent, the YMCA of the USA, according to representatives for the national YMCA group.

His new position will require him to step down from his position with the Boston-based YMCA.

The transition is scheduled to happen early next year, when Washington will replace Neil Nicoll, the current national YMCA president and CEO. Nicoll announced in June that he would step down from the position, which he has held since 2006.

Washington joined the YMCA of Greater Boston in 2010 and helped guide the development of a strategic plan covering 2014 through 2017.

Before he joined the YMCA of Greater Boston in 2010, Washington served as the president and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Hartford for 10 years.

The YMCA of Greater Boston didn’t respond to a request for comment on Monday about Washington’s pending departure.
