Lion’s head time capsule: Mysterious 1901 box inside Boston statue debuts today

The mystery of the copper box found inside the head of a Lion’s statue gets one step closer to being solved today as plans are underway to open the time capsule of sorts. Hidden in a lion statue on top of one of Boston’s historic buildings is a box that holds some secrets of the city’s past. The Bostonian Society will engage in the delicate opening of that box today, according to The Huffington Post on Oct. 9.

Rumors of the box’s existence have swirled around the iconic Boston State House for decades. The rumors were proven fact when the statue was taken down for refurbishing earlier this year and there it was, that copper box. Years ago a great-great-granddaughter of a man who worked on renovations of the building notified the society that the box was there, it was something her family knew about because of her ancestor’s work on the building, reports ABC News today.

Not long after that a newspaper clip from the Boston Globe in 1901 surfaced alluding to the copper box and its contents. The contents would “prove interesting when the box is opened many years hence.” Oh, the mystery builds, so just what do the members of the Bostonian Society expect to find in the box?

While the box removed from the lion’s head will be opened up today, it is not promised that the contents will be taken out of the box and researched as of yet. The documents and other items in that box were put there 113 years ago and their condition will be delicate at best, reports WBUR News today.

To preserve the integrity of the items, they may need to be slowly removed and displayed at a later time, said Heather Leet, director of development for the Bostonian Society. What they do expect to find in the Lion’s head capsule are newspaper clippings, letters and political paraphernalia from that day and age, according to the group that runs a museum in the building.

Will that copper box reveal some new information on Boston’s history? Will the letters and documents carry the signatures of some of Boston’s historical names? Again, the mystery is one step closer to being solved today with the opening of the copper box from the lion statue’s head.
