BOSTON — Parts of Greater Boston picked up more than 5 inches of rain between midday Wednesday and midday Thursday, the National Weather Service said, as a nor’easter moves through.
The torrential downpours left deep puddles of standing water on many Massachusetts roads, prompting closures, and making for a slow Thursday morning commute. Two lanes of Interstate 95 Northbound were closed in Weston.
A spokesman for the state Emergency Management Agency said water was slow to drain because leaves are clogging drains and catch basins.
There have been no reports of major injuries or death. At least one school district, Peabody, canceled classes.
National Grid was reporting about 7,700 customers without electricity as of noon Thursday, while NStar had about 2,000 outages.
