Irish Coffee: Hating the Heat easier than beating Miami

Listen, I’m a Bostonian. I learned the game of basketball watching Larry Bird and listening to my father’s stories of Red Auerbach‘s Celtics of old. Cleaning out some old stuff from my parents house over the weekend, I found a Reggie Lewis collage from 20 years ago. Do I see the NBA through green-colored glasses at times? Probably. Then again, I’m one of the guys who a couple months ago had the Celtics as a seventh seed losing in the first round, so I like to think I can take a step back and look at games and series and seasons rationally. Not when it comes to LeBron James, Dwyane Wade Continue reading >>>

Bar review: Goat & Compass

Thursday nights at Goat and Compass in Wilmington’s Brooklyn district go a little something like this: a cute bartender humoring a regular, a Bostonian with the accent, $3.50 Blue Moons, Miami swinging triple digits against the Pacers, lights dim but not too dim, Lou Reed in the speakers, “Doo do doo do doo do do doo …” “I come here even when I’m off,” says 34-year-old Christie Ann, the bartender. “We have great patrons, and they usually act right.” When I arrive, Larry Crose, the Bostonian, is the only customer in the bar. He moved here for work, he tells me, and lives Continue reading >>>

Ruth Dudley Edwards: Euro crisis is a real threat to Obama

TIMES are challenging and we must get our laughs where we can, so before I write about the US presidential election on which so much depends, I must share with you the story of Harvard professor Elizabeth Warren, Democratic candidate for the senate seat of Massachusetts. But in 2010, after Ted Kennedy's death, it was recaptured for the Republican Party -- to general liberal consternation -- by the little-known Scott Brown. Warren has become a national laughing Continue reading >>>
