Keller @ Large: What Makes A Great Boston Man

BOSTON (CBS) – The men of Boston don’t always have the best reputation. But Thursday night at the 18th annual Men of Boston Cook for Women’s Health fundraiser at the Codman Square Health Center in Dorchester, the real Bostonian man was defined in a way Hollywood and outsiders never could. “Nights like tonight prove that men don’t fit all the stereotypes people have for them,” said Ken Casey of the Dropkick Murphy’s. In addition to fine wine and good food, men at the Dorchester event served up a message of what makes a great Bostonian man. “It’s an unknown fact that Boston Continue reading >>>

  • Want the Perfect Steamed Lobster in Beijing? Head to the Lobster Kitchen

I'm from Boston, and the lobster is to Bostonians what Roast Duck is to Beijingers. And with all due respect to Australians, this is not a lobster worth eating: Simply put, it's missing the most succulent parts: the meaty front claws. And with all due respect to Beijingers, this is no way to enjoy lobster, either: These xiaolongxia (小龙虾) have way too much shell and way too little meat, rendering them nothing but an inconvenient delivery vehicle for the sauce they are cooked in. Lamentably, until recently these two varieties have been the predominant types available in Beijing. This, however, Continue reading >>>

How ‘ums’ and ‘ers’ are changing Bostonian Spanish

Boston has seen a dramatic increase in its Hispanic population since 2000, over 25 percent according to census records. That’s left an obvious and significant mark on the way locals speak English — but the city’s Spanish is also evolving, according to forthcoming research from Boston University linguist Daniel Erker.Erker’s paper focuses on pause fillers, those tiny unconscious blips of sound, “um” or “uh” in English. What he’s found is that, as the city’s Spanish-speakers study English and come into contact with different varieties of their Continue reading >>>

Happy 325th anniversary to America’s first newspaper, published (and banned …

In 1690, an enterprising Bostonian was not supposed to just up and start a newspaper—at least not without permission from the British government. But that didn’t stop Benjamin Harris, a Boston shopkeeper with a history of flouting government restrictions on printed material back in England. Publick Occurrences Both Forreign and Domestick published its first issue on September 25, 1690, in Boston. According to the Massachusetts Historical Society, it was America’s first newspaper, and Harris promised readers that a new issue would be published each month. The first issue of Public Continue reading >>>

The T Sucks And We All Suffer

$thumbclass)); echo ''; echo get_post(get_post_thumbnail_id())->post_excerpt; echo ''?>--> Every Bostonian – born and raised or recently transplanted – can unequivocally agree on this one thing, if nothing else: the T sucks. The massive network of trains that moves us all from point A to point B has some strong points, true; it’s convenient (except when it isn’t), it reduces congestion in the city streets (just think how bad traffic would be without the T!) and it’s good for the environment (or at least better). Bostonian Customs Agent to Joel Edgerton: ‘Don’t F–k Up’ Accent in ‘Black Mass’

Joel Edgerton realized the importance of getting the accent right as he made his way into the U.S. from Canada to film the new gangster thriller, Black Mass. And it came in the form a stiff warning from a U.S. customs agent.“He was from South Boston and he knew that I was doing this movie,” Edgerton, who plays corrupt FBI agent John Connolly, told Yahoo Movies. “And he literally said to me, he’s like, 'You better get it right. Don’t f--k it up.’ He said the words to me, 'Don’t f--k it up.’”Black Mass, which tells the story of crime boss James 'Whitey’ Bulger (Johnny Depp), who Continue reading >>>

Watch: Dakota Johnson Is Amazing At Accents

It seems Jimmy Fallon’s hit show has become less an opportunity to interview stars but more so a platform on which to discover said stars hidden talents. We were quite literally blown away by Ariana Grande’s Britney, Christina and Celine impressions, not to mention Tom Cruise’s lip-syncing abilities, but now we’ve learned that Fifty Shades actress Dakota Johnson can pretty much nail any accent on request. French, Australian, Bostonian – we hope the casting directors of the world are listening. Dakota stars as Whitey Bulger’s (Johnny Depp) significant other in the yet to be released Continue reading >>>

Dakota Johnson Can Whip Out Any Accent on Command

In Black Mass, Dakota Johnson plays a Bostonian, and she made it a point to get that accent right“If you mess it up, they might kill you,” she explained to Jimmy Fallon last night. So she eavesdropped to perfect it—and then showed Fallon just how effective the method is by doing Boston, French, Australian, and Southern accents on the spot:

That Aussie one is really so great. Bravo!
