Read Our Letter to Posterity

We’ve been asked what exactly it was that we wrote in our letter that’s in the Old State House time capsule. Well, here it is. Image via the Bostonian Society When the Bostonian Society asked Boston to write a letter to posterity to be slipped inside of a custom-made time capsule, which will be placed in the Old State House lion statue, and read by the people living in the city in 2114, we were honored, to say the least. But once the fuzzy feelings finally subsided, the stress set in. “What should we write?,” we thought. And we thought, and we thought. The possibilities Continue reading >>>

Dorchester Hat Trick: A Bostonian Dream Come True

Follow Paul on Twitter: @paulstewart22 Thanksgiving Day of 1979 in the United States fell on November 22. Tomorrow marks 35 years since that day, which was when all of my boyhood dreams came true. All I ever wanted in my life was to play hockey. I appreciate my Groton and University of Pennsylvania education -- maybe I do have a little more intelligence than my critics think I do -- but the rink has always been where I've been the happiest. Without hockey, I wouldn't be alive to write this. As a matter of fact, without the goal of reaching and then returning to the NHL, I might not have even Continue reading >>>

Kickboxing in Julio Pena’s blood

Julio Pena realized he wanted to keep fighting in a moment that would make most think twice during his kickboxing debut in 2007.“He caught me with a hook on the tip of my nose, and my nose started to bleed pretty good,” recalled Pena. “I remember the ref separating us after clinching up, and I saw the blood and was like, ‘Man, this is real.’ I used a couple other words that I don’t think you can print, but I was like, man, this is insane, this is crazy, this is awesome. I could do this again.”The journey that began that night in Philadelphia for Pena, a Jamaica Plain native and deputy Continue reading >>>

‘Super Shiny’ Lion and Unicorn Statues Return to Old State House This Sunday

Bostonians may not immediately recognize the refurbished gold lion and silver unicorn statues when they return to the top of the Old State House on Sunday morning. Their restored coats will be just that sparklingly different. “They are super shiny,” Heather Leet, the Bostonian Society’s director of development, said. “It’s a huge change from what they looked like.” The unicorn, in particular, will be noticeably different with its new palladium cover. When the statues were taken down from the Old State House in September, the unicorn had turned a bland shade of greenish-gray. The Continue reading >>>
