A Bostonian Who Fears The Dictator

RUSH:  Here is Roberta in Boston.  I'm glad you called.  It's great to have you on the EIB Network.  Hello. CALLER:  Rush, thank you so much.  I'm in tears.  I have finally found my lucky day to reach you.  I stayed right in my house and said, "I will dial until I can't, whether it be an hour later," and much to my surprise, I got you in a few minutes.  I love you. I adore you. I love your mind so much, Rush. I cannot tell you how profound your thinking is that is way above the average person, including me.  But when I heard you in that little deduction, that presentation of what you Continue reading >>>

Pats’ Devin McCourty comments on potential gay teammate

From an Improper Bostonian interview, very positive. The remainder of the interview was short-answer questions that also were pretty funny.

HOW WOULD YOU FEEL IF ONE OF YOUR TEAMMATES WERE GAY?
I wouldn’t be surprised.

HOW DO YOU THINK IT WOULD BE ON THE TEAM?
I think it would be cool. I’d be surprised if anybody had a real problem with it in this day and age.

Old State House and Unicorn — an Unfolding Story – The Armenian Mirror

By Donald J. Tellalian BOSTON — The restoration process of an historic landmark so often yields surprising discoveries. Old newspapers and handwritten notes buried in walls, names and initials of workmen carved into timbers are some of the delights of discovery. This August, the anticipated restoration of the copper Lion and Unicorn, iconic figures gracing the top of the East Façade of Boston’s Old State House, may prompt such discoveries. The Old State House, at the head of State Street, has offered a veritable odyssey of reincarnation. The building dates from 1713. Yet, as with so many Continue reading >>>

Vietnamese eatery Anh Hong deserves ‘Best of Boston’ props

Anh Hong It’s common knowledge among Bostonian Vietnamese and increasingly Dorchester’s worst kept secret: one may not find better, more authentic Vietnamese food elsewhere than here in the Dot. Indeed Dorchester is home to one of the fastest growing Vietnamese enclaves in all of America. Thanks to an array of outstanding Vietnamese establishments, Dorchester is hands-down the Vietnamese food capital of Boston. Amidst the culinary heavyweights in restaurant-dense Fields Corner neighborhood, Anh Hong still rises to the top with its beef-times-seven magic, the signature dish bo bay mon (seven-course Continue reading >>>

Edinburgh 2014 review: Alex Edelman – accomplished and poised

The opening salvos of Bostonian standup Alex Edelman's Edinburgh debut are characteristic. He starts with a joke about coming out at his family's Thanksgiving, the first punchline of which (and don't worry, there's more to it) is that he's not gay. It's simultaneously amusing and a bit glib; Edelman's chuffed with the stunt he's pulling, and unconcerned that a straight man coming out for laughs might look in any way cloth-eared or insensitive. That's also characteristic of what Edelman calls the "millennial" generation; he's not the first comic of his age-group to appear oblivious to – or Continue reading >>>

Front Street’s Nixs is Hartford’s first EB-5 project

This Friday, when Nixs Hartford opens its first Connecticut restaurant and lounge on Front Street, it will be partly thanks to foreign investors from China and Vietnam who jointly anteed up at least $1 million to finance the project. The craft cocktail and seafood eatery's parent company, Bostonian Hospitality Group, registered the project with the federal EB-5 visa program, which gave two foreign nationals a path to U.S. permanent residency in exchange for their equity investment in the new job-creating venture. It's Hartford's first EB-5 project but likely not the last: City officials Continue reading >>>

‘You Got That, Chief?’: A Greater-Bostonian Remembers Robin Williams

Robin Williams wasn’t a Bostonian. He was a Midwesterner, and like a lot of actors from the heartland (Martin Sheen’s Mayor Quimby bray from “The Departed” is a good example), he couldn’t quite nail the Boston accent in “Good Will Hunting.” It’s there, lingering at the edges as he tears Damon’s psyche down on that park bench and yells at Stellan Skarsgard in the restaurant, but it never completely bulls-eyes that specific tone. You know what, though? It doesn’t matter. Not one bit. That’s the brilliance of that movie, and Williams in it; his Sean Maguire is in the pantheon Continue reading >>>

Plans fall through for Inner Harbor Apple Store [Links Roundup]

Apple had ‘serious discussions’ about opening an Inner Harbor store [Baltimore Business Journal]: “The owner of the office building at 400 E. Pratt St. pursued a deal with Apple Inc. to bring a 10,000-square-foot Apple store to the Inner Harbor, but the deal fell through in part because of the company’s need for a soaring ceiling.” A Bostonian’s take on why parking app Haystack must fail [Baltimore Business Journal]: “I personally limit my driving in Boston because it’s really hard to find parking in much of the city, especially during peak times. But Haystack and other apps Continue reading >>>
