T station technology for visually impaired to debut in ’16
Navigating a T station can be challenging enough — even without a visual impairment.
A new technology designed at the University of Massachusetts Amherst might make subway orienteering easier for blind people — or more likely, for people who lack that innate Bostonian I-know-exactly-where-I’m-going sixth sense — by offering step-by-step instructions on how to get to their destination inside a T station.
The electronic navigation system, called PERCEPT, uses a smartphone application to help people detect landmarks inside a station and provides verbal directions for moving from one Continue reading >>>
16 Food Things Only A Bostonian Would Understand
Do you run on Dunkin'? Do you know the true meaning of a "frappe?" When you hear someone refer to "Legal's" do you know they're talking about a group of seafood restaurants? You must be from Boston, or somewhere "outside of Boston," as everyone says. There are many things that only people who grew up in or around Boston will understand. We're not bad drivers -- you are. "The Globe" isn't the world -- it's our paper. There is only one sports rivalry, and if you're not a Sox fan, you're on the wrong side. When it comes to food, there are definitely certain truths Continue reading >>>

Learning the Lost Art of Ice Harvesting in Maine
In 1805, a twenty-three year-old Bostonian named Frederic Tudor launched a new industry: the international frozen-water trade. Over the next fifty years, he and the men he worked with developed specialized ice-harvesting tools, a global network of thermally engineered ice houses, and a business model that cleverly leveraged ballast-less ships, off-season farmers, and overheated Englishmen abroad. By the turn of the century, the industry employed 90,000 people and was worth $220 million in today's terms. By 1930, it had disappeared, almost without trace, replaced by an artificial cryosphere of Continue reading >>>

BSO 2014-15 season announcement
The privilege of my whiteness
My nephew just got married in Boston. The celebration was beautiful, and I especially liked hearing all his relatives, old and new, saying how much they appreciated our coming from “so fah away.” You can hear a Bostonian a mile away.I am a New Yorker. Everywhere I have lived in the United States, people nod their heads when I say I’m from New York. I don’t say “New Yawk” or talk like Jerry Seinfeld and his friends, but I guess regional identities go much deeper than that.I’m Jewish. That puts me in a distinct minority nearly everywhere I go, except in synagogue and at some of my friends’ Continue reading >>>
