Suspect in string of Andalusia burglaries arrested

ANDALUSIA, AL (WSFA) - The Andalusia Police Department says it has arrested a man and closed numerous property crime cases dating over a two year span from July 2011 to June 2013. Police say a neighbor with a keen eye is to thank for helping them bust a large burglary ring. An investigation started September 9 after police say a citizen noticed a "kids" ATV located next to the home at 300 Camelia Avenue. The citizen had reported his children's ATV stolen in August 2012.  At that time there were no leads or suspects in the case. After seeing the ATV, the citizen contacted the police department Continue reading >>>

Firefighter OK after falling through roof on Van Buren Street – FOX19.com …

LINCOLN HEIGHTS, OH (FOX19) - A Wyoming volunteer firefighter was injured Wednesday evening while battling a blaze on Van Buren Street in Lincoln Heights. He is now in good spirits and recovering. Taylor Wood, 22, was responding to a fire call just like any other. "Once we got there, we saw flames coming out the windows, heavy smoke coming out the eves of the house," said Wood. He was on the roof checking for a place to ventilate the house.  While he was up there, the roof started to feel a little soft, so Wood thought it was time to get down.  That's when things changed. "As I'm going back Continue reading >>>

COLUMN: Finding Your Boston

The label “born and raised Bostonian” is something that many people hold with pride. I accept this label even though it is semi-undeserved because I was raised in a suburb about 30 minutes away from the city. Despite this minor detail, I consider myself a Bostonian through and through. The love of Boston was instilled in me at a young age. I walked the Freedom Trail for fieldtrips, watched the sea lions touch balls with their noses at the Aquarium, sang “Sweet Caroline” with my brothers at Red Sox games in thick August heat, and trekked into (the vastly overrated) Fire and Ice Continue reading >>>

Viewing the Tsarnaev Rolling Stone cover from another angle

[Editor's Note: Yesterday we reported on the controversial Rolling Stone cover with outrage. Today, in the name of open discussion, Vanyaland staff writer Hilary Hughes is approaching the subject from a different angle, and we encourage and welcome open and respectful debate on the topic.] It was announced yesterday that the face of Dzohkhar Tsarnaev, who just last week pled not guilty to the crimes he’s accused of committing that tie him to the Boston Marathon Bombings, would be staring out at readers in between the headlines on the cover of Rolling Stone’s August issue. The reaction Continue reading >>>

Avoid 9 of Boston’s Biggest Tourist Traps with These Alternatives

A current view of Faneuil Hall, taken from our very own office window. Tourist traps: An all too familiar sight Bostonians work tirelessly to avoid. One accidental step onto the Freedom Trail and suddenly, "Say ‘bar.’ You pronounce it ‘bah,’ right? How ‘bout ‘chowdah?’" A woman from Wyoming widens her eyes, perplexed after you correct her. She watched “Good Will Hunting”; jotted down notes. “Wicked smaht” she repeated, tagging at the zipper on her fanny pack, practicing. After all, that’s how she wanted to sound. Little did she know, those accents are fading fast. With Continue reading >>>
