Bostonians of the Year: Raisman and Harrison

Check back Sunday for honorable mentions in this year’s Bostonians of the Year. THE APPLAUSE BEGINS BUILDING as soon as she steps onto the floor of the TD Garden, even before the announcer can say her name. By the time the phrase “hometown hero” leaves his lips, a wild roar has swept through the packed arena. Admiring parents cheer while their adoring daughters scream. Their young sons, whose facial expressions had suggested reluctant attendance at this performance of the Kellogg’s Tour of Gymnastics Champions, even they begin to join in with vigorous applause. Aly Raisman has that effect Continue reading >>>

Video: Klaine celebrates a ‘White Christmas’ on ‘Glee’

And best of all, Papa Hummel (Bostonian Mike O’Malley) drops by. We don’t get to see “Glee’s” pinch-hitter enough. Not sure I care for this rendition of the song, which seems overproduced. Has Darren Criss ever sounded so deep before? And as a bonus clip, check out how Sue (Jane Lynch) interprets the holiday season - and the episode itself, an homage to “Love Actually.” This entry was posted on Wednesday, December 12th, 2012 at 9:59 am and is filed under Fox, Glee. Newton Native John Krasinski Dishes on New Film in Latest ‘Improper Bostonian’

Most people know John Krasinski for his "nice guy" roles -- most famous, of course, his character Jim Halpert from the hit television show "The Office." But in Krasinski's latest interview with The Improper Bostonian, the Newton native talks about a different and deeper side to his career, and his latest screenplay "Promised Land."  Krasinski teamed up with fellow Boston-area native Matt Damon to write the film, which follows the story of a company trying to buy drilling rights from a small rural community that has been hit hard by the economy. However, the corporation is met with opposition Continue reading >>>

Review: We assess the Bostonian influence and pedigree of new downtown bar …

When I heard a “Boston bar” was opening downtown, I didn’t know what to expect. A place with dusty Larry Bird, Ray Bourque and Tony Eason jerseys hanging on the wall? Or would it mimic a hallowed haunt where politicos belly up to a fancy mahogany bar and finalize deals over Wild Turkey and a handshake? In a city like Boston, sports and politics are religion, passionately debated by after-work crowds over a frothy pint. So there was no doubt in my mind when I walked into the city’s newest downtown watering hole, Commonwealth, that it would resemble one or the other. And let’s face it: A Continue reading >>>

OAKLAND, CA.- A confluence of events over the past two years has created an increased enthusiasm for collecting Islamic Art, according to Jan David Winitz, eminent art dealer and president of Claremont Rug Company.Citing the late 2011 opening of Metropolitan Museum of Art’s new gallery of Islamic Art as the key event, he said that art collectors have intensified their interest in rugs from the “Second Golden Age of Persian Weaving,” generally recognized as the period ca 1800 to ca 1910.In 2012, Winitz pointed to opening of a major permanent exhibit at the Louvre.
