When Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg showed up at a meeting with Wall Street investors in May wearing a hoodie, his sartorial choice sparked a flurry of headlines contrasting Silicon Valley's laid-back culture with the East Coast's insistence on formality. Now, new research finds that this West Coast-East Coast culture clash isn't just media stereotyping. In fact, people living in the east coast city of Boston closely link Continue reading >>>
At the Expo: Diversity and Togetherness
Love is in the air on the expo's second day.
On the first day of the Escapist Expo, I attended a panel staffed by a born-and-bred Bostonian, two British expats, a Canadian, and a displaced Oregonian, hosted by a man from Texas. That night, we all gathered on the lawn of the picturesque American Tobacco Campus to watch a cheesy 80s movie, and frankly, it was too dark to tell who anyone was - all I could make out was their raucous laughter whenever something bizarre happened onscreen or MovieBob made a particularly incisive comment.

Speak like a Bostonian
We’ll give you a warning: If you’re new to Boston, the phrase “Pahk your cah in Hahvahd Yahd” normally goes over about as well as wearing a “Burrows” or “Rodriguez” jersey to the local watering hole (and you can’t park there anyway). Yes, there’s an accent, but it’s hardly as pronounced as Hollywood types might have you believe. Still though, there will be a number of terms, phrases, and other references here that might have you scratching your head. Here’s a guide. Take notes.
Wait, Can I Park Here?
There are many wonderful luxuries to living in Boston; Beautiful parks, delicious food, historically-laden streets, high-caliber institutions, the best sports teams around…ask any Bostonian why they love living in Boston and you’ll hear answers across the board. But, if you ask any Bostonian what the worst part about living in Boston is, they will say, “Pahking.”
According to the city of Boston’s official website, there are approximately 7,300 electronic parking meters offering two-hour parking. No one is ever lucky enough to grab one of these coveted spots. The merciless drive around Continue reading >>>
Downtown View: Welcome, new Bostonians
There is still a lot of trash on the sidewalks from the move-ins, but soon those reliable trash collectors will do their job, some nice neighbor will do a little sweeping, a rain will arrive and wash away the sticky debris, and we’ll be back to normal.
But what is normal for permanent residents is new to the new arrivals, whether you are students, families or young single professionals sharing digs with people like them.
So here is a guide to behaving like a true Bostonian.
First, get used to walking in the street, especially if you live in the North End or on Beacon Hill. Continue reading >>>
