Everyone wants Paul Guzzi’s job, and its big paycheck

Hardly anyone is talking about being the next director of the Boston Redevelopment Authority, but the rustle of resumes for Paul Guzzi’s job is so loud I can hear it from my perch on Morrissey Boulevard.Guzzi, 72, will retire next spring after 18 years as president of the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce. It’s become the hottest job prospect in town, drawing the attention of seemingly every aging white guy, former state legislator, and high-ranking official about to leave the Deval Patrick administration. Boston Beats New York in Housing Affordability

Take that, Big Apple. Boston is now a more expensive place to buy a home than New York, a new report finds. Plus, our paychecks are bigger too. Sure, Manhattan prices remain in a league of their own. But Boston metro market, which includes suburbs spread across Eastern Massachusetts, has a median home price of just under $400,000, having risen about 4 percent over the past year. That’s a shade above the comparable number for New York and its own surrounding swath of suburban sprawl, which weighs in at just over $396,000, Interest.com finds in a new report that tracks housing costs in the Continue reading >>>

Read Our Letter to Posterity

We’ve been asked what exactly it was that we wrote in our letter that’s in the Old State House time capsule. Well, here it is. Image via the Bostonian Society When the Bostonian Society asked Boston to write a letter to posterity to be slipped inside of a custom-made time capsule, which will be placed in the Old State House lion statue, and read by the people living in the city in 2114, we were honored, to say the least. But once the fuzzy feelings finally subsided, the stress set in. “What should we write?,” we thought. And we thought, and we thought. The possibilities Continue reading >>>

A TicketZen Partnership is Somerville’s Missed Opportunity

Image via Creative Commons/ Lisa @ Sierra Tierra (CC BY 2.0) On Monday, November 24, Somerville residents will be the first in Greater Boston to be able to feed their parking meters using just a mobile device. Made possible through a partnership with Parkmobile, the idea is to foster collaborative partnerships between the city and businesses and, of course, to inject convenience into the lives of those who find themselves a quarter short of the time they need to park their cars. It's peculiar, then, that Somerville doesn't want to afford the same kind of advantage for paying parking Continue reading >>>

Dorchester Hat Trick: A Bostonian Dream Come True

Follow Paul on Twitter: @paulstewart22 Thanksgiving Day of 1979 in the United States fell on November 22. Tomorrow marks 35 years since that day, which was when all of my boyhood dreams came true. All I ever wanted in my life was to play hockey. I appreciate my Groton and University of Pennsylvania education -- maybe I do have a little more intelligence than my critics think I do -- but the rink has always been where I've been the happiest. Without hockey, I wouldn't be alive to write this. As a matter of fact, without the goal of reaching and then returning to the NHL, I might not have even Continue reading >>>
