Quincy’s three other closed synagogues

Congregation Beth Israel was incorporated in May 1918, and construction of its new synagogue began that summer. The cornerstone was laid at 33 Grafton St. on July 4, 1918, and the building was dedicated on Sept. 1. It served European immigrants who worked in the shipyards, and at its peak, during the 1940s and ‘50s, had 200 families and a vibrant Hebrew school. Dwindling membership led to its closure around 2007.

Pop Warner seeks to cut concussions

Youth football leagues in Greater Boston will sharply limit head-to-head contact during practices this year, following new rules by the national Pop Warner organization designed to cut the chance of concussions. Beginning in August, Pop Warner teams will only be allowed to have contact for one-third of practice time. Pop Warner seeks to stem concussions

Pop Warner, the country’s largest youth football organization, is taking the steps after research showed that most of the hardest hits in youth football occur during practice, not in games. The rule change represents a big change for youth football leagues, which have roughly 80 franchises in the Boston area, and comes amid mounting concern about concussions and other head injuries all the way up to the professional level, especially in football.

Guide to upcoming MBTA changes

It started back in January, when the MBTA, staring down a $160 million hole for the coming year, introduced two plans to cover the deficit through fare increases and service cuts. One leaned more heavily on fares, the other on cuts. With transit ridership in Greater Boston at its highest level since 1946, the public was outraged. The prospect of a 43 percent increase on fares and passes and the elimination of up to half of all bus routes, all ferries, and all night and weekend service on the commuter rail prompted 6,000 people to pack hearings and 6,300 to write to Continue reading >>>
