Occupy sprouts in Greater Boston

On a recent Saturday morning, a small group carried signs near the Post Office in downtown Salem. When it reached a busy traffic intersection, some stuck a few placards in the ground while others, like Clare Ritchie, took a break and leaned on her sign that read: “Tax equalization is real important, [love], 99 percent.’’ After she straightened the sign toward the traffic, she smiled, and then sighed. “We need fairness in our society; we need to help the people who are suffering.’’ While Occupy Wall Street and big-city spinoffs such as Occupy Boston Continue reading >>>

Then & Now: Five Score of Fore at Kernwood

As Salem expanded during the 19th century, most of the farms and estates of the Northfields or North Salem were either subdivided or incorporated into the two large cemeteries. Francis Peabody, the son of one of the wealthiest merchants in America, was a powerful force in Salem and left a lasting legacy. As a young man, he passed on a college education in order to concentrate on his interest in chemistry and mechanical engineering. In Continue reading >>>

He has traveled the world to tout the Bay State and, despite budgetary challenges, his administration has lowered the corporate income tax rate and encouraged regional approaches to economic development to break the all-too-common parochial stranglehold that can choke business growth.Even in his proposed fiscal year 2013 budget, he plans a net reduction of 300 state jobs, on top of the nearly 6,000 his office said have been cut since October 2008. And, to underscore Continue reading >>>

Behind The Sound Bite: Natural Gas Prices

In recent weeks, two major Massachusetts utilities, NStar and National Grid, have proposed reductions in the price customers pay for natural gas. “The continued drop in prices has made natural gas one of the most economical choices,” NStar CEO Tom May said in a statement about the reduction. How much of a reduction are we talking about? NStar, which serves Greater Boston and much of MetroWest, said it would lower the total heating costs for its natural gas customers by about 10 percent. National Grid, which covers a large part of Worcester County, put its price cut at 6 percent. Why Continue reading >>>
