The Next Boston Band by Michael Fertik: Promote Rock [Book Review]

The Next Boston Band is an entertaining and fascinating Ebook by the talented author, Michael Fertik. It is about Greater Boston’s top indie promoter, Mekhi Bessel, who is a likable rogue who is not above using trickery and cajoling to create concerts and events out of nothing. In Fertik’s book, Bessel finds himself on the wrong side of thugs called the Tygers brothers, who, as Fertik puts it, “cooked all the nightlife in Boston.” That is right as there is a movement going on in Boston, to try to have another great rock band come out of the city, something that has not happened since Continue reading >>>

Local robotics startups debut at downtown showcase

Two robotics startups from Greater Boston debuted products this week at the RoboBusiness conference and exhibition. Just a year old, Soft Robotics presented its gentle, air-powered versatile robot grippers in public for the first time. For Sonzia, a Somerville firm that incorporated in September, it was a first public demonstration of immersive, interactive environments for children with learning disabilities. Soft Robotics showed us how a small version of the gripper, the size of a child’s hands, could pick up a variety of shapes — a ball, a set of keys, or even a prickly and delicate Continue reading >>>

Hey Homebuyers, It Gets Better

Boston-area buyers have endured serious abuse over the past couple years, facing sometimes dozens of competing offers and cocky sellers dictating all sorts of demands. While it is too soon to call an end to what has been an epic seller’s market, buyers are finding a less crazed atmosphere as they check out homes and visit open houses this fall. An increase in the number of homes hitting the market across Greater Boston has meant there are more listings to choose from, brokers say. In some cases, buyers are even able to haggle over price, instead of simply asking “how high” before signing Continue reading >>>

Mush In The Middle: Baker And Coakley Balk At Drawing Sharp Distinctions

Republican Charlie Baker and Democrat Martha Coakley participate in a Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce debate. WBUR’s Bob Oakes, right, moderates. (Jesse Costa/WBUR) In lamenting the sleepy state of the Massachusetts governor’s race, much has been made of the less-than-electrifying personas of the two front-runners. It’s true that neither Republican Charlie Baker nor Democrat Martha Coakley will be accused of speechifying in the spellbinding manner of Deval Patrick, or of having the mesmerizing, retail charm of Bill Clinton on the stump. But the reason the race Continue reading >>>
