Just days before he is to be sworn in as Boston’s 54th mayor, Marty Walsh joined hosts Emily Rooney and Callie Crossley on Greater Boston. They spoke with Walsh about how he plans to take on those issues as the city’s first new mayor in two decades- from the nuts and bolts of city government, to a Revere-Boston casino agreement, to an overhaul of the Boston Redevelopment Authority. 

Analysts: Economy is on track

Event raises $100K for Breakthrough Boston

Breakthrough Greater Boston, the nonprofit organization dedicated to preparing under-resourced students to attend four-year colleges and to training the next generation of urban teachers, hosted its annual Breakthroughs in Education event Dec. 5. Now in its sixth year, the lecture series featuring experts working to improve urban education raised $100,000 in supporter contributions. This year’s event, A Vision for Black Boys’ Academic Success, drew Boston and Cambridge public school educators, elected officials, philanthropists and local community members. Waltham student wins top award at Model UN conference

Twenty-three Acera School students participated in the United Nations Association of Greater Boston Middle School Model United Nations Conference held at Northeastern University on Nov. 23. After months of rigorous preparation, four of the Acera middle school students, including one from Waltham, received the Outstanding Delegation Award, the highest award given at the conference. Each student was assigned a country to represent, a committee and a topic for debate. The students learned the rules of debate, practiced public speaking, negotiating and writing resolutions. Menino’s childhood YMCA will now bear his name

As Mayor Thomas M. Menino took in the crowd gathered in the gymnasium at the Hyde Park YMCA, his mind took him back to basketball games and Ping-Pong tournaments of his youth. He grew up, and still lives, not far away. Cambridge ceremony recognizes firefighters for heroics

The valor and selflessness displayed at the Boston Marathon bombings in April were spotlighted during Thursday’s event honoring dozens of firefighters from 18 cities and towns across Massachusetts for their heroics both on- and off-duty, including several from Brockton, Marshfield, Quincy, Scituate, Stoughton and Weymouth.
