Attracting doctors to Western Massachusetts a difficult proposition, survey says

SPRINGFIELD - Doctors find it is twice as hard to recruit colleagues to work in the Pioneer Valley compared with Greater Boston, according to the results of a survey released Wednesday by the Massachusetts Medical Society. Recruiting doctors to Berkshire County is three times as hard, doctors said in a survey that also revealed that 77 percent of Massachusetts physicians find their careers in medicine rewarding, a one-percent drop from 2012's finding. Seventy-five percent of responding physicians in Hampden, Hampshire and Franklin counties told The Massachusetts Medical Society that the pool Continue reading >>>

Massachusetts Exceptionalism — A Forum on Costs

Here are some reasons why, I believe:First, the CEOs at the front of the room tonight all live and work in Massachusetts and run state-based organizations, six of eight of them non-profits.  This is not true in most other states where national for-profit hospital systems and health insurers rule the land.  Second, every one of the eight companies has stories to share about tackling rising costs and improving their care systems; every CEO mentioned how they are moving away from fee-for-service reimbursement fast, toward global payment and accountable care.  Third, the GBIO members in the audience Continue reading >>>

Letter: Roads too dangerous to ban bikes from sidewalks

I have traveled by bike in London, Holland, Honolulu and Japan. Nowhere have I been more terrified than in Greater Boston. Frank Caro’s suggestion that bicycles should be banned from all sidewalks in Brookline is outrageous. I would throw myself in front of an oncoming train before I would bike in Brookline traffic. The idea that painting “bike lanes” on already overfilled streets makes cyclists safe is absurd. The fact that many cyclists prefer to ride in the street for speed and efficiency does not mean they are not constantly at risk. A cyclist hit my car recently Continue reading >>>
