Chicago Stepping Invades Boston Dance Floors

It's a steamy summer night in Dorchester and the air conditioner at the Carver Den is on the fritz, so a few industrial strength fans will have to suffice. It's Thursday, and that means heat or no heat The Original Steppers of Boston have some dancing to do. Since 2006, this group has brought Chicago-Style Stepping to dance floors all over Greater Boston. Each Thursday, they hold a lesson and open dance at the Carver Den on Talbot Avenue in Dorchester. If you haven't hear of Chicago-Style Stepping, you're not alone.  "Chicago-Style Stepping is an urban ballroom Continue reading >>>

West Roxbury food pantry to receive deliveries again

Ann Coska knows despite the well-cared-for lawns and gracious homes, hunger lurks in West Roxbury, the most suburban of all Boston neighborhoods. The petite 74-year-old, who lives in a tidy apartment with her six rescued cats, had for years depended on the Roslindale Congregational Church’s food pantry. When she was told the pantry could only serve Roslindale residents, she was relieved to learn from friends in the same situation the May Institute on Centre Street distributed food. While she receives food stamps, she said the high-quality staples she picked up at the Continue reading >>>

Where and Why Hub Condos Go for Over or Under Asking

As I looked at the details of the extreme over-asks and under-asks, I wondered what separated them? Was there any characteristic that could determine whether an on-market condo would attract extreme or negotiated offers? I decided to look into it. My first thought was to compare location, location, location. What I found out was that extreme over-asks were most prolific in Somerville, where almost one out of every five sales was extreme, and Cambridge, where nearly one out of every seven closings was extreme. In fact, I saw that just four markets (Cambridge, Somerville, Brookline and JP) Continue reading >>>

Boston Pols Continue to Eye Wynn Proposal Suspiciously

The subject of a proposed resort casino development in Everett has evolved quite dramatically in the past nine months. In November, nearly any politico who was paying attention to casino development in Massachusetts had determined that the lone resort casino license for the Greater Boston area was going to be awarded to the group that owned Suffolk Downs in East Boston and Revere. However, since that time the competition for that sole license in the eastern region of the state has been turned on its ear, and the recent rumblings out of Boston – including an obviously planted story in the Boston Continue reading >>>
