Wayland teen experiences the rewards of volunteering

At the end of June, 14 students from Wayland and Natick took part in Good Shepherd Parish’s Boston Summer Service and Immersion Trip. It was a great experience for everyone involved. During our trip, we volunteered at a number of places in and around Boston – Noonday Farm (a self-sufficient organic farm that provides food for service agencies), Haley House (a Catholic worker house with locations in the South End and Roxbury providing many services including a soup kitchen, food pantry, low-income housing, job training and a cafe), Pine Street Inn (the largest center for homeless services Continue reading >>>

Mass. shark attack victim returns to beach

TRURO — A man bitten by a great white shark last month while swimming off a Cape Cod beach has returned to the scene. But he did not go in the water. The Cape Cod Times reported that Christopher Myers, whose legs were injured in the July 30 attack, was greeted by several people who recognized him at Ballston Beach in Truro. Myers, a native of Greater Boston who lives in Denver, has been visiting relatives before returning home. He chatted with well-wishers and had his picture taken at the beach he has called his favorite. Jennifer Beke of Westfield, N.J., snapped a picture of Myers with Continue reading >>>

Tobey Maguire films in WGBH studios

Tobey Maguire was at the WGBH studios Wednesday, but, alas, not to sit down with Emily Rooney on “Greater Boston.” The actor was there to shoot a scene for “Labor Day,” director Jason Reitman’s film based on Joyce Maynard’s book. Maguire filmed a scene with actor Gattlin Griffith, who plays the younger version of Maguire’s character. We’re told the crew cleared out in time for Rooney to tape Wednesday’s episode of “Greater Boston.”

Uber Gets The Green Light In Boston, With Help From The Massachusetts …

Yesterday, we reported that Uber had came under fire from the Division of Standards of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, receiving a cease and desist letter that sought to shut down its operations in the Greater Boston area. The issue has since been resolved, with an amended decision saying Uber was “not out of compliance with state law” and free to continue operating. At the heart of the dispute is Uber’s use of GPS location technology to pick up riders and determine appropriate fares. The Standards Division initially ruled that since the National Institute of Standards Continue reading >>>

My Meeting with Julia

On Sept. 10, 2001, WGBH's Emily Rooney interviewed Julia Child at her Cambridge home before she left the Boston area for California. Jared Bowen was the producer on the segment and shares this remembrance. Greater Boston reairs the interview on Aug. 15 at 7 p.m. The medium-sized grey house on Irving Street in Cambridge was remarkably regular: small driveway, unassuming front door, smallish yard. I suppose I assumed that the house Julia Child lived in — and more importantly cooked and filmed in — would be as striking as her outsized spirit. But that was my only disappointment on a sunny late-summer Continue reading >>>

Young immigrants excited about chance to apply for work permits, but want to …

By Martine Powers, Globe Staff About 20 members of the Student Immigrant Movement gathered on Friend Street this morning to commemorate a historic day: The first day young people living in the United States illegally can apply for a work permit and a reprieve from the threat of deportation. But the gathering also had a more nuts-and-bolts objective: to provide much-needed information on the application process. Isabel Vargas, who came to the United States from the Dominican Republic when she was 8 years old, told others at the meeting, held inside the offices of Greater Boston Legal Continue reading >>>

Cost Of Renting A Home On The Rise

BOSTON (CBS) – It’s a question that frustrates tenants across the state:  why are rents so high? In fact, rents in the Greater Boston area are among the highest in the country. By one estimate, it takes $1,700 to get a unit in the suburbs and $3,000 in downtown Boston. “This season has been extraordinary.  Rents are super high.  I think the vacancy rate is 3-percent right now,” said Tim Schmidt of ReMax Destiny in Cambridge. That vacancy rate is second only to San Francisco. Schmidt believes one reason for the high rents is good news.  The region’s job market is stronger than Continue reading >>>
