Globe: Mohegan Sun Could Promote Connecticut Casino to Bostonians

The Boston Globe has uncovered public records showing that Mohegan Sun’s so-called marketing agreement with the state, in the event it winds up with a license to build a Suffolk Downs gambling resort in Revere, would allow it to promote its Connecticut casino to Greater Boston residents. Mohegan Sun has said it would not try to lure Greater Boston residents to Connecticut, where the tax rates on gaming institutions are lower, if it had a casino up here. For Massachusetts, seeing people leave the state to gamble defeats the very purpose of establishing casinos here in the first place. The Continue reading >>>

Six Greater Boston Spots Transforming Before Our Eyes

North Cambridge Around Alewife The development wave around the last stop on the Red Line started to crest in the last half of 2012, as a plethora of projects inched toward their groundbreakings, completions or approvals. These included the 227-unit Residences at Alewife; the 428-unit Atmark Cambridge (its bocce court is picture above); and the 244-unit 165 Cambridgepark Drive. All totaled, these and other developments are spilling more than 1,200 new apartments onto the Alewife area market. That's not only a lot of new tenants but a lot of Cantabrigians. Can the notoriously change-averse city Continue reading >>>

With Mass. deal, Mohegan could promote Conn. casino

As it vies for a Boston-area gambling license, Mohegan Sun has consistently denied it would try to steer high-stakes players away from Massachusetts and toward its flagship casino in Connecticut, where the company pays less in taxes. The company’s financing partner even suggested that a confidential marketing agreement bars the Connecticut casino from trying to lure away Greater Boston gamblers with enticing promotional offers. Continue reading below But that is not the case, according to a copy of the agreement obtained by the Globe through the state public records law. If the Revere Continue reading >>>

Tricky race for John Tierney

SALEM — “The Democrats could have trotted out an orangutan this time and I’d vote for him.” Behold, Seth Moulton’s biggest asset in his campaign to unseat longtime incumbent Congressman John Tierney: that even if this challenger were an ape, Salem resident Don Armell would still vote for him. Continue reading below That’s the way it is in the Sixth District these days. Tuesday’s primary isn’t really about the upstarts running to unseat Tierney, impressive though they may be. It is a referendum on Tierney himself. Sitting outside his house Wednesday, sipping coffee with friends, Continue reading >>>

Martha’s Vineyard oysters could cause foodborne illness

Now that it’s September, it’s unofficially oyster season in New England. Having grown up amongst Greater Boston’s idyllic fishing communities, I’ve abided by the old adage only eat oysters during months that end in ‘ber.’ September is no exception; except for the fact that oyster beds off the coast of Edgartown on Martha’s Vineyard have been closed. On Wednesday afternoon, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the Massachusetts Department of Fish and Game, Division of Marine Fisheries announced the precautionary closure of the oyster beds in Katama Bay. The two departments Continue reading >>>

Attorney general candidates Maura Healey, Warren Tolman make pitches to … – The Republican

BOSTON - Democratic attorney general candidates Maura Healey and Warren Tolman made their pitches to the Boston area business community on Wednesday, as they enter the final week of what is shaping up to be a tight race. "This is a job I believe I'm suited for," Healey, a former bureau chief in Attorney General Martha Coakley's office, said at a Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce breakfast. "I don't view it as a consolation prize. I don't view it as a stepping stone." Tolman, a former state senator, previously ran for governor and lieutenant governor. Tolman told the crowd that the race is about Continue reading >>>
