Companies donate turkeys to brighten Thanksgiving for those in need

Hoping to brighten Thanksgiving for needy families, Stop Shop has donated 7,200 turkeys to the Greater Boston Food Bank, a spokeswoman for the chain said in a statement.

Stop Shop’s gift is the biggest turkey donation to the Greater Boston Food Bank so far this season, said GBFB spokeswoman Stacy Wong. Other companies donating turkeys include Shaw’s, BJ’s, Hannaford, Roche Bros., Whole Foods, Agar Supply, CS Wholesale Grocers, and KINGS in the Back Bay.

“Given the high demand for resources this year, food banks are stretched to do more with less,” said Suzi Robinson, a New England spokeswoman for Stop Shop, in a written statement. “We’re pleased to be able to continue to offer these food banks relief and help feed nearly 130,000 people in New England this holiday season.”

The Stop Shop turkeys are a corporate donation, but customers of the supermarket can also donate money to local food banks through the store’s Food for Friends program, the statement said. The company hopes to raise $2 million that way.

The Greater Boston Food Bank is also accepting donations directly at their Turkey Drive fund. A 12-to-14-pound turkey costs $16, the food bank said.

The food bank’s goal is to give 40,000 turkeys to needy families. So far, they’ve received commitments for donations of 33,500 turkeys.
