Surprise hero helps MC dispatch BC High in hockey tilt

For Malden Catholic to get five goals from its top line of Ryan Fitzgerald, Brendan Collier and Michael Iovanna should come as no surprise. For the Lancers to get two from third-line right winger Patrick Wrenn, however, is a different story.

The sophomore from Charlestown had a goal in each of the first two periods, tying the game each time and paving the way for the Lancers to beat BC High, 7-4, in a Catholic Conference showdown at Valley Forum II in Malden yesterday.

“He had some great goals, and it carried us for two periods,” Malden Catholic interim coach John McLean said. “I didn’t think we were in sync for the first two periods and I thought the third line (of) Patrick Wrenn, (Bobby) Keogh and Pauly Myers did a great job.”

Wrenn’s first goal of the season came at 2:07 of the first, canceling out P.J. Johnson’s goal for BC High (5-1-0, 1-1-0) just 43 seconds into the contest. The second for Wrenn made it 3-all at 5:25 of the second, sliding a shot between the pads of Eagles goalie Peter Cronin while being pulled down.

Iovanna (two goals, assist) scored 1:31 later to make it 4-3, and Collier (two goals, assist) gave MC (5-1-1, 2-0-0) a short-lived two-goal cushion with 2:14 to play in the second. Brian Furey’s second of the game pulled the Eagles back to within a goal heading into the third.

Iovanna and Collier each struck in the third for a comfortable final scoreline.

Conal Lynch had two goals and an assist, scoring the game-winner with nine minutes left in the third period off an assist from Kevin Catrone to give Boston Latin (6-0-1) a 3-2 win against Methuen in a DCL/MVC II boys hockey showdown.

In Patriot League play, Tom Cahill and Cullan Fitzgerald combined for two goals and seven assists, while goalie Bobbly McElligot had 25 saves as Pembroke handed Hanover its first loss, 6-1.

Chris Leblanc finished with four points (two goals, two assists) in reaching the 100-point mark for his career, while sophomore Dan Eruzione also had two goals and two assists to lead Winthrop (4-2-2) past Salem, 8-3, in the Northeastern Conference.

In the Greater Boston League, Medford (3-4) stormed past Somerville, 7-0, behind Brian Enos’ two goals and three assists.

In the Bay State Conference, Pete Kelly had a goal and five assists to help Norwood roll past Dedham, 9-0.

Girls hockey

Kate Piacenza and Christy Caliendo each scored a hat trick as Billerica took a 7-3 win against Waltham.

Boys basketball

Jameilen Jones had 24 points while Charles Collins added 18 to help BC High beat Fitchburg, 61-52.

Tyrese Hoxter had 29 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists to help Charlestown triumph over Hope, 73-58.
