The Gridiron Club of Greater Boston announced that Providence College men’s hockey junior forward Tim Schaller (Merrimack, N.H.) was named one of 21 semifinalists for the 60th Walter Brown Award, presented annually to the best American-born college hockey player in New England.

Schaller leads the Friars with a career-high 13 goals and ranks second on the team with 19 points. He also ranks in the top-10 in Hockey East in goals scored, power-play goals (6) and short-handed goals (2). Schaller, who has been named Hockey East Player of the Week twice (11/7 and 2/13), has five multiple-point games this season, including a hat trick against Vermont on November 4.

The Gridiron Club will announce the finalists and winner of the 60th Walter Brown Award in March, following league playoffs and before the start of NCAA Tournament play.

Four Providence players have earned the Walter Brown Award in its 59-year history. The most recent winner was Mike Omicioli, who shared the honor with Boston College’s Mike Mottau in 1999. Prior to Mike Omicioli, Rob Gaudreau won the award in 1992. In addition, Tim Army won the award in 1985 and Ron Wilson, Head Coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs, was the first Friar to win the award when he was honored in 1975.
