CHART: Where Does the South End Go For Coffee?

Greater Boston is a coffee-mad area, with chain and local coffee shops seemingly on every corner.

There are plenty of great locally owned choices in each city and town, but to measure the relative amount of coffee in our blood streams, Patch looked at the area’s two biggest players: Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks.

It’s not surprising Dunkin Donuts controls more locations in the 18 communities surveyed, but did you know they outpace Starbucks by an almost 3:1 ratio? There are 115 Dunks in the surveyed region compared to 43 Starbucks. Taken together, that’s 158 chain locations in 18 communities. Add in the eight Honey Dews and six Paneras, and you’ve got 172 corporate-controlled coffee dispensers, or nearly 10 per community in our survey. That’s a lot of purveyors for the world’s favorite stimulant.

Here’s the breakdown of Starbucks and Dunkin Donut locations in the area. And check out South End Patch’s directory if you’d prefer to find a locally-owned and run caffeine dealer.
