A time capsule placed inside the head of the lion statue at the Old State House in Boston in 1901 was carefully removed yesterday at a Woburn studio, revealing a surprise — a red, hardcover book.
The shoebox-sized time capsule was removed by Robert Shure, president of Skylight Studios, where the copper and gold-leaf lion statue had been brought for refurbishing.
The Bostonian Society had expected to find photographs and newspaper clippings in the capsule, but didn’t expect to find a book.
The items were not immediately take out of the box — the Bostonian Society plans to remove and examine them in a temperature-controlled setting.
