College roundup: Bussani, DiCenzo earn Boston Gridiron Club honors



MIDDLETOWN Wesleyan senior defensive back Jake Bussani was named one of the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston’s Joe Zabilski Award winners as the top Division III defensive player in New England.

Bussani was one of four NESCAC players chosen for the New England Football Writers (NEFW) Division II/III all-star team. The last Cardinal to grace the NEFW all-star squad was Shea Dwyer during the 2010 season.

Bussani, who was also selected the NESCAC Defensive Player of the Year, led the league in interceptions with seven, returning them for 108 yards and two TDs. Bussani picked off a Wesleyan-record 18 passes over his four seasons.

Joining Bussani as a Gridiron Club of Greater Boston honoree was Wesleyan associate head coach Dan DiCenzo, who was named Division III assistant coach of the year. DiCenzo joined the Wesleyan coaching staff as associate head football coach and defensive coordinator in 2010.

Men’s Basketball

Wesleyan 79, Elms 55 In Middletown, the Cardinals went a blistering 12-for-23 from long range and had four players in double-figures en route to a non-league win Tuesday night at Silloway Gymnasium.

Wesleyan’s Jack Mackey made 5-of-7 three point baskets and finished with a game high 17 points. Rashid Epps added 15 points, Harry Rafferty netted 13 points and Joe Edmonds chipped in 11 points for the Cardinals (4-1), who led 39-28 at halftime.

Kenny Lockett had 10 points for the Blazers (1-4).

Wesleyan travels to Curry on Saturday, Nov. 29 for another non-conference outing.

Women’s Ice Hockey

Wesleyan 4, Sacred Heart 3 In Bridgeport, Ellery Sarosi scored two goals with one assist and Jordan Schildhaus had a goal and an assist to lift the Cardinals to a non-league win Tuesday night.

Sarosy converted a pass from Laura Wasnick for the game-winner early in the third period. Lottie Barton added a goal for Wesleyan (2-3).

Natasha Klinoff, Brianna Connolly, and Alanna Woodford each had a goal for Sacred Heart (2-4).

The Cardinals continue their out-of-conference play with a game at Holy Cross on Sunday, Nov. 30.
